Products Containing MI Are Toxic

Are Your Skin Care Products Actually Making Your Skin Worse?

Methylisothiazolinone also known as MI is a very popular preserver, which keeps products lasting longer and keeping it safe from bacteria and fungus. This preservative in the products you use all the time allowing them to last longer and not go bad before needing to be replaced. It is found mostly in liquid cosmetics and personal care products. This product is found as a white power when in it’s raw form after being produced from a chemical reaction between chloromethylisothiazolinone and methylamine. In this raw form it can easily be purified to be used in a variety of products.

Things you use on a daily basis like soaps, locations, shampoos, and laundry detergents including popular brands like Dove, Pantene, Tide, Olay, and Nivea contain this chemical. MI used to be a very popular preserver in lip balms and baby wipes but has recently been taken out because of how many people have been affected by the health effects of this chemical.

Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash that is supposed to help protect sensitive skin contains MI.

This product has many downsides, but most concerning are those that can affect your health. Using products that have MI in them, is simply not good for you. It is very common to be allergic and have reactions to this chemical. It can ruin your skin, leaving you itchy, red and swollen. Since MI causes allergic reactions it is classified as a acute toxic chemical meaning it can occur right after you apply it. It can also cause serious internal damage and long lasting health consequences when inhaled or swallowed

Since this chemical is very toxic, many people do not like to use it and instead find alternatives for MI that do not make them sick. Popular brands that don’t use this toxic chemical include Aveeno and products from The Body Shop. People have also made their own moisturizers using things like caprylyl glycol because it is a natural chemical found in coconut oils. By using alternatives it will lower your risk of getting allergic reactions from this toxic chemical.
